How can energy be shared among a cluster of buildings?

In most big French cities, reflecting the situation in Paris, any construction of new housing is quite limited. Efforts to streamline energy consumption must now involve the improvement of existing structures. One of the main opportunities we have identified involves the development of energy exchanges between buildings and facilities. What we’re talking about here is a change of scale, going from positive energy buildings to positive energy islands, which means multiplying opportunities and enhancing impact.

To tackle this Challenge and identify a field of experimentation, project promoters could use data collected by the Parisian Urban Planning Workshop (APUR), originating from the Local Energy Plan for the Paris metropolis. In terms of the Greater Paris Region, APUR has put together a toolbox combining cartography, data and analysis elements that provide support for policy regarding the reduction of energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions (GHG).

The partners of the program can provide project promoters with access to several different sectors covering a range of different use cases and consumer types.

 

On the one hand, there are buildings with sensors (data on fluids, moisture, light, movement):

 

– Paris City Hall
Paris’ 12th District
Sports halls
Nurseries

 

– Nexity, Vinci Energies and Setec all have buildings equipped accordingly

– Nexity: company headquarters, rue de Vienne (Paris’ 8th District)

 

 

For buildings that don’t have sensors, the City of Paris can provide consumption levels based on billing records.

 

– Among the buildings available are one of the 600 primary and pre-schools in the city: http://opendata.paris.fr/explore/dataset/liste_des_etablissements_scolaires2/

– Eco-quartiers: the label “éco-quartier” (or eco-district) is the distinction provided by the government to districts committed to the ideals of Sustainable Cities.

– Paris is home to several éco-quartiers: Boucicaut, Clichy-Batignolles, Frequel-Fontarabie, ZAC Claude-Bernard and the former train station Gare de Rungis.

– Data has been collected on these districts, more precisely data on the energy consumption of buildings (of all types) and on public lighting systems.

– Paris Habitat: Paris Habitat manages social housing programs for the City of Paris. As such, this entity can provide data on the energy and heating assessments of social housing projects.

Data from the study includes:

 

– Information on building stock, as much in terms of consumption as of the capacity to accompany the advent of renewable and recycled energy

– The enhancement of energy networks and the development of renewable energy

Definition of a “sharing” offer with Nexity aimed at the renovation of housing but also for the construction of new housing.

For Suez: define an offer by Suez aimed at large housing cooperatives, propose an offer of services in partnership with a start-up for a better market position

 

For the start-up: Help the start-up to better define an offer based on gamification approaches / clearly a partner for distribution

Experimentation

 

The study was based on a simulation of three buildings in Paris with complementary uses: a nursery, a service building and a residential building. During the experiment, Openergy developed tools and algorithms to measure the potential energy transfers ​among the buildings and generated recommendations to equip, for instance, the buildings with the right heat exchanger or ventilation system to transfer energy among buildings.

 

Results

 

 

During the experiment, Openergy demonstrated the viability of its modeling and showed that:

– The office building studied could supply power equivalent to a nursery and 400 apartments.

– 100 sqm of office space provided a power supply for hot water and heating equivalent to a residence​. The potential in Île-de-France is tremendous with 50 million sqm office space.

 

Impact

 

Building on these impressive results, Openergy and Nexity are designing a common commercial offer aimed at the renovation of housing but also the construction of new housing. This experiment was a major success and a win-win situation for all stakeholders:

 

– Openergy gained access to a new distribution channel​, in a high-potential industry with contracts in the millions. The experiment is also a reference ​in a field where few exist.

– Nexity ​added a new and cutting-edge expertise​ to their catalogue.

– Citizens ​are provided with a way to reduce their consumption ​and emissions.
